The Farningham Hobby Horse Project
Tankerton Slopes
12 noon
The Farningham Hobby Horse project was launched on June 11th as part of the Kent Cultural Baton. Project artists Franny Swann and Ros Barker are both installation artists who work with memory and memorial.
This project aimed to re-create an ancient Horse Fair once held in the village of Farningham but with hobby horses made by the village and its friends. Residents were given plywood blanks and invited to return a hobbyhorse, which reflected their maker, who they were, and what they did.
The enthusiastic community response enabled the artists to curate an extraordinary installation of 120 creative, colourful, horses effectively replicating the village.
Participants ranged in age from 4 to over 90 years old and included the school, local business, societies and institutions. The Farningham Horse Project is a rare thing - a true community project that reflects its community at a moment in time while connecting to it’s past.
(Weather dependent)
The Farningham Hobby Horse Project will now travel around Kent, by invitation, until June 2012.
